The four bronze lions which keep watch at Nelson’s Column in Trafalgar Square were joined by a fifth fluorescent red replica, as part of London Design Festival 2018 (17-23 September).
The red neon lion designed by artist Es Devlin called Please Feed the Lions encourages members of the public to feed it poetic words, which by day are shown on an LED screen located in the lion’s mouth and by night are projected onto Nelson’s column; displayed on a loop throughout the evening.
We had the task of building three projection towers either side and directly opposite the sculpture which housed the projectors. The main challenge for us was getting materials on to site late in the evening and building the towers ready for the following morning. Despite high winds and poor visibility, the towers were ready for the artwork’s unveiling, scheduled first thing on monday morning.
